Presentation - Slides

  • 1, Hi, I’m Jaz Lawrence, and today I’ll be presenting how we can apply key ethical principles in behavioral health to Case 2, where a case manager learns a client has abused her son. We’ll explore how to handle this difficult situation with care, professionalism, and faith-based compassion.
  • 2, This case presents a deep ethical challenge. The client is clearly struggling and has made a serious mistake. As the case manager, I want to support her, but I also must protect her child. My job is to balance care with accountability.
  • 3, Autonomy means honoring the client’s right to choose. While I can’t ignore the abuse, I can help her take back control of her life by guiding her toward services that empower and educate her without being controlling.
  • 4, Fidelity is about keeping professional promises and being loyal to both the client and the ethical code. I would explain clearly that I have to report the abuse but will still stand by her as she works to make changes.
  • 5, My role includes promoting her well-being and preventing further harm. Reporting the abuse might hurt our relationship, but it protects her child. I’d also ensure both mom and child get connected to help, showing care—not judgment.
  • 6, Justice means fairness. I can’t let personal feelings or sympathy cloud what’s right. The child’s safety comes first, and I would also work to make sure the client gets support from services that can help ease her burdens.
  • 7, Honesty is crucial. I must tell her the truth, even when it’s hard. Hiding what I know or trying to protect her from consequences would be dishonest and could cause more harm in the long run.
  • 8, I care about this client, but I have to put my emotions aside and do what’s ethical. Talking with a supervisor or colleague can help me work through personal feelings while staying on track professionally.
  • 9, From a Christian view, I believe in truth, justice, and mercy. I would act with love and grace—reporting the abuse while also walking alongside the client in her healing journey, believing people can change with support and faith.
  • 10, In closing, applying ethical principles isn’t always easy, especially in emotional cases. But by staying committed to both professionalism and compassion, we can make a difference in the lives of those we serve. Thank you.
