SENIOR DIRECTOR, AFRICA ADVOCACY & PARTNERSHIPS

01.2023 - Current

I oversee the design and implementation of Global Citizen's Africa policy and campaign strategy, align all global advocacy and policy strategies to African countries and manage government relations with priority markets and key partnerships with foundations .

Key Accomplishments :

  • Designed and delivered advocacy strategy that identifies key advocacy priorities from African governments and multilateral actors such as the African Union and ECOWAS, in line with global strategy
  • Managing execution on Africa focused grants that fully integrates asks to African (and other non-OECD) countries.
  • Established and strengthened key strategic relationships with national stakeholders at government level, and other key partners, including foundations, media, think tanks, NGOs, multilateral organizations, to boost political will and help bring in new resources (financial and in kind) to the organization.
  • Co-lead Global Citizen's advocacy campaign (Power Our Planet - June 2023) on sidelines of the New Financing Pact Summit in Paris, co-chaired by President Macron and Prime Minister Modi, rallied commitments and pledges from African Heads of State and Multilateral Development Banks geared at ending extreme poverty and closing climate funding gap with the following objectives:
  • $100billion in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) reallocated this year, including through MDBs
  • Clear roadmap on how $100billion in climate finance will be met this year
  • MDBs commit to ambitious reforms to leverage more financing and to develop joint financial target.
  • Debt pause clauses adopted by a coalition of bilateral and multilateral creditors in the event of a natural disaster or pandemic
  • Transitional to a low-carbon future: coalition supporting the shipping levy to fight climate change in vulnerable countries.
  • Leading on preparations for Africa Climate Action Summit in Nairobi in September 2023, working with other Civil Society Organizations, Development Agencies and President Ruto's team to mobilize African leaders to commit to addressing climate change and its associated challenges.
  • Launched and executed of the Move Afrika. A pan African campaign and Global Citizen’s latest effort to address the world’s inequities by creating job and entrepreneurship opportunities for the continent’s emerging generations through an annual series of world-class live events.

I was responsible for implementing Global Citizen's vision, which aims to end extreme poverty that is globally coordinated and relevant in every Country in which we work. My job was to support the organization's advocacy and public campaigns, communications, marketing and business development by providing vision and strategic direction to all Global Citizen's work in Nigeria and West Africa.

Key Accomplishments :

  • Lead and developed fundraising strategies within Nigeria and West Africa to cultivate required in-market investment and maximizing donor outreach
  • Pursuing, securing and retaining key financial partnerships in Africa and globally
  • Designing and delivering strategies that identified key policy wins that ensured long term sustainability of GC movement
  • Established and strengthened key strategic relationships with global, regional and national stakeholders at government level, and other key foundation partners, media, NGOs, multilateral organizations and the private sector to boost political will and brought in new resources (financial and in-kind) to the organization (ECOWAS, AU, the Gates Foundation, Ford Foundation, Africa CDC, UNFPA, Access Bank, AIM Group, JCDecaux Nigeria, Vanguard News and BellaNaija)
  • Leading and providing insight into global, regional and local advocacy strategy and supporting global advocacy team to mobilize new commitments for Africa's most marginalized communities
  • Established Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund (NSSF) representing Global Citizen as the main fund subscriber in partnership with Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority with fund target of $50 million to support Covid-19 response efforts for Nigeria by Nigerians
  • Recruited, hired, and trained all Global Citizen Nigeria and West Africa staff improving overall performance while maintaining 100% in employee retention from 2020 to 2022.

Advocacy & Campaigns to End the Pandemic and Extreme Poverty:

  • One World Together At Home - virtual fundraising campaign in partnership with WHO (raised $127M for PPE)
  • Global Goal Unite to fund vaccine - partnered with EU to support Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator initiative, including COVAX, vaccine-sharing programme co-led by the WHO (raised $1.5B from European Nations)
  • Recovery Plan for the World - launched a policy direction to activate millions of citizens behind five most critical health, social, and economic challenges we currently face as a result of the pandemic and to get the world back on track to end extreme poverty.
  • VaxLive - campaign calling on philanthropists, corporate and world leaders to commit to equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine by donating excess doses to poor countries. I was a key member of the advocacy team which surpassed campaign goals with more than $53.8 million to procure nearly 10.3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses.
  • Producer, Global Citizen Live Lagos - The campaign to defend the planet and defeat poverty marked a major milestone at Global Citizen's 24-hour global broadcast, Global Citizen Live on Sept. 25, 2021. More than US$1.1 billion, 157 million trees, and over 60 million COVID-19 vaccines were announced during Global Citizen Live, thanks to partnerships between government, philanthropy, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
  • As the Regional Advocacy and Campaign Lead for the Global Citizen Festival Accra 2022 along with global senior leader team, I worked with policy makers, corporates and philanthropists and campaigned to call for investment to end extreme poverty and got $2.4 billion in commitment to protect the planet, empower women and girls, defend advocacy, and break systemic barriers. Especially getting across the line the following commitments:
  • Commitment to Launch a $1 billion Africa Prosperity Fund for Africans by the governments of Ghana and South Africa.
  • The US committed to work with congress to provide $138 million in new funding to support health, education, climate and peacebuilding.
  • The United Nations in Ghana made a $500 million commitment to empower institutions and people through capacity development.

GROUP HEAD, SUSTAINABILITY & CSR

VISIONSCAPE GROUP

As the Group Head, Sustainability and CSR I had overall strategic responsibility for the global sustainability operations of Visionscape Companies (2 Companies in England, Northern Ireland, Belgium and Nigeria). I had responsibility for leading the formulation of the group long-term sustainability vision, mission and operating principles that drive implementation of key initiatives.

Key Accomplishments:

  • Leading and coordinating all facets of product development process to ensure consistency, standardization, collaboration and organizational alignment to meet the company's business objective
  • Project planning and development of reporting frameworks for the start-up Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, Lagos
  • Developed and implemented the Corporate Sustainability Plan (CSP) 2018 - 2022 which provided a strategic 5-year road map for all companies within the group and details a true reflection of an inclusive and sustainable culture based on business and global expectations
  • Recruited and trained sustainability teams and provided oversight on sustainability implementation in all Visionscape subsidiaries
  • Coordinated group-wide needs analysis assessment in line with regulatory compliance and ISO 14001:2015 requirements
  • Created the framework for accurate data collection across key functions of the business including planning, operations and fleet and produced performance reports that facilitated management decisions
  • Developed and implemented a pilot Recycle Credit Program (RCP) between Visionscape subsidiaries in Nigeria, Belgium and United Kingdom which contributed to a realigned Group Circular Economy Strategy
  • Managed data for environmental, social and governance (ESG) data reporting to ensure alignment to sustainability commitments and the company's contribution to the sustainable development goals (SDGs)
  • Spearheaded our global environmental literacy platform that has seen close to 70% target impact; exceeding expectation before year-end 2018
  • Launched Visionscape Day, an employee volunteer platform, dedicated to volunteerism and philanthropy by all Visionscape employees in a bid to positively give back to their respective host communities in twelve months, this platform has significantly impacted over 3000 lives.

LAGOS WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY
01.2010 - 12.2016

Developed environmental strategies that ensured corporate sustainability including conducting Environmental Risk and Impact Assessment on proposed waste management projects and leading the Implementation of environmental guidelines, policies and practices within the waste management sector.

Key Accomplishments :

  • Led and developed fundraising strategies within Nigeria to cultivate the required in-market investment and maximizing donor outreach
  • Completion of an Outline Business Case (obc) and concession for the State waste transfer loading stations
  • Developed the strategy framework for the statewide waste collection and recycling and resource recovery programs to enable private sector partnerships, the programs had an estimate value of over N30 billion in 5 years
  • Monitored and implemented early warning systems and community surveillance system for timely anti conflict action and ensure coordination and monitoring of the first material recovery facility in Nigeria with 5 million pounds foreign direct investment from West Africa Energy
  • I was part of the team that completed the draft and final copy of the National Recycling Policy.

Deputy project manager - william . J. Clinton foundation – climate Initiative (cci) Lagos integrated waste management project, US$10 million Lagos state funded project.

  • Developed project planning concept between LAWMA and the Clinton Foundation for the establishment of technical assistance to the Lagos State Government, climate change projects;
  • Increased effectiveness of bidding processes by reviewing contractor scopes and material takeoffs;
  • Negotiated purchase of project materials and inventory required to meet project schedules;
  • Eliminate discrepancies by carefully reviewing budgets to prevent overspending and adhere to financial objectives.

  • On the sideline of the New Financing Pact Summit in Paris in June 2023, I worked with the new World Bank President Ajay Banga and his team to announce the commitment for Climate Resilient Debt Clauses to provide a pause in debt repayments for the most vulnerable countries in times of a natural disaster or pandemic.
