It was only for a short period of time in the summer of 2024 but it was worth every second of my time. I was able to shadow a single doctor for a couple of weeks, her specialty is Internal medicine. I was able to join Dr. Ball during her patient visits (only if the patient allowed). It was very helpful to work hand in hand with a doctor and to hear and visualize the interaction between the patients and the doctor. Every case was different in its own way. She would be known as a primary care because she sees some patients monthly or even weekly. I can remember a time when a patient needed to lose weight to help with their high blood pressure and overall health. Patient came back and had lost the weight! She was ecstatic and so excited but so was Dr. Ball. It was interesting to see how Dr. Ball pushed her patients to be the best versions of themselves and celebrate their achievements with them. I strive to be that kind of doctor. it was a 10/10 experience for me and I would do it all over again!
I worked alongside many doctors and nurses in various specialties in the clinic. Specifically, I remember working side by side with a physical therapist and she was able to teach and show me how she examines patients. I was taught how to properly draw someone's blood for the first time. Overall, I was able to gain knowledge from each specialty and was able to write notes that could benefit me in the future. I was able to go into the patient's room, with the patient's approval, with the doctor and it allowed me to have a perspective or an idea of what a day in a life of a doctor really entails. It was the first time I was able to put medicine into my own real life perspective.
This job entailed:
Helping patients from their room (after surgery) to their car
Filing and paper work for administration
Organizing patient information
Checking patients in and out, at the front desk
Restocked patient supplies and supplied each room or patent with warm blankets
Learned how to take a patient's blood pressure for the first time
